LANAP (LASER-ASSISTED NEW ATTACHMENT PROCEDURE) is a therapy designed to be less invasive, less time consuming, and with faster healing.  It is an FDA-approved patented protocol for the treatment of gum disease.  

Lanap Surgery

In LANAP surgery, a  specialized dental laser is used by a trained and certified dentist or periodontist to treat the periodontal pocket. The laser energy selectively removes diseased pocket tissue from healthy tissue. This process is different from other lasers on the market which affect both inflamed and healthy tissue. Because of this, profound healing and regeneration is possible in a minimally invasive method.

Lanap Is A Procedure That Involves Multiple Steps In A Precise Order

    • We create a small opening (flap) all the way around the teeth with the laser, which kills bacteria and the infected gum tissue, then begins breaking down calculus (tartar).

    • We use various instruments to thoroughly remove as much of the tartar build-up as possible.

    • We use the laser a second time to kill more bacteria deep under the gums and to form a clot around the teeth to minimize reinfection.

    • We adjust your bite to remove any areas where you may be grinding your teeth and loosening them.

    • There is a series of follow-up visits to carefully evaluate your healing.

What To Expect After Lanap Surgery

After LANAP, many patients have a regenerative outcome, preventing tooth loss. Pocket depth reduction is excellent and comparable to that achieved by conventional resective osseous or pocket reduction surgery, but without the gum recession normally associated with traditional surgery. Significant post-operative reduction in bleeding, inflammation, and pocketing LANAP.

The patient experience is also generally positive. As LANAP is tissue-sparing and contrary to the old fashioned resective paradigm, patients enjoy a smile with minimal post-operative recession and attendant disfigurement or root sensitivity. Minimization of post-therapy gingival recession also reduces the future risk of root caries/dental decay of the tooth root. Through the natural analgesic biostimulatory effects of laser irradiation, patients usually have minimal post-operative discomfort. This discomfort is easily controlled through the use of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (over the counter NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen.

With normal three month periodontal recall and maintenance, the LANAP-provided new attachment is remarkably stable and resistant to future periodontal breakdown. Patients are encouraged to improve and maintain standards of oral hygiene to prevent further active periodontitis.

Serene gum grafts I was referred to Westport Perio by my dentist who saw my gum line receding. I was very nervous about any oral surgery, but Dr. Campbell explained every aspect of the procedure and how it will help and why it's important. After consideration I accepted my fate, and it turned out to be as smooth as a bobsled ride. The staff was friendly and the procedure was simple, my fears were overblown. Dr Campbell was highly recommended through my primary dentist for having 2 front implants put in along with his skills and talking through every step by step procedure made it very easy with every process that was done he never failed to make that private call to see how I was doing are any questions His credentials were highly 5 🌟 stars plus more . Dr. Schaberg and his entire team are outstanding.  I went to him for an implant on my front tooth.  He has a great way about him, very good people skills and he explains the process very well. Space is clean, parking isn't a hassle, and Dr. Kyd is very informative and takes his time to get to know his patients and makes every effort on the educational piece of everything. He did a thorough job with my exams and the auxillary staff are professional and courteous. I'm not a fan of how the insurance companies work, but at least there are good and caring professionals in the states.
